چکیده
Selenium (Se) is an essential element for humans and animals, which 28 occurs ubiquitously in the environment. It is present in trace amounts in both 29 organic and inorganic forms in marine and freshwater systems, soils, biomass and 30 in the atmosphere. Low Se levels in certain terrestrial environments have resulted 31 in Se deficiency in humans, while elevated Se levels in waters and soils can be 32 toxic and result in the death of aquatic wildlife and other animals. Human dietary 33 Se intake is largely governed by Se concentrations in plants, which are controlled 34 by root uptake of Se as a function of soil Se concentrations, speciation and 35 bioavailability. In contrast, biomethylation by plants and microorganisms can 36 result in a loss of Se to the atmosphere. The mobilization of Se across soil-plant37 OPEN ACCESS

متن کاملSoil migration, plant uptake and volatilisation of radio-selenium from a contaminated water table.
The properties of (79)Se make it of likely potential importance in safety studies for geological disposal of radioactive wastes. Despite a substantial literature on toxic and nutritional aspects of selenium in the environment little consideration has been given to the behaviour of radioactive selenium and its potential transfer from a radioactive waste repository to the biosphere. Column experi...
متن کاملRhizosphere Microbial Communication in Soil Nutrient Acquisition
Most of the upper layer of the earth’s terrestrial crust is or has been influenced by plant roots, so most soil is actually rhizosphere soil at one time or another. Through their physical, chemical, and biological interactions with the soil, roots play a major role in soil formation (Jenny, 1941) and soil function (Wardle et al., 2004). Microbes factor prominently in global nutrient and energy ...
متن کاملFormation of Se (0) Nanoparticles by Duganella sp. andAgrobacterium sp. isolated from Se-laden soil of North-East Punjab, India
BACKGROUND Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element, but is toxic at high concentrations. Depending upon the geological background, the land use or on anthropogenic pollution, different amounts of Se may be present in soil. Its toxicity is related to the oxyanions selenate and selenite as they are water soluble and bioavailable. Microorganisms play an important role in Se transformations in ...
متن کاملSelenium Mobility in Soils and its Absorption, Translocation, and Metabolism in Plants
INTRODUCTION Forms of selenium found in soils influence its mobility, uptake, and metabolism by plants. The major forms in alkaline, oxidizing environments which are available for plant uptake are selenium-VI as selenate, Se0 4 2 -) and selenium-IV (as selenite, $e0,'). The major influences on uptake are soil pH and salinity. High salinit y and pH favor seienium anion adsorption onto clays and ...
